Here Are Some Cool Magic Tricks To Perform

By Barb Church

Everyone loves magic; from the littlest kid standing open-mouthed when you pull a quarter from behind his unsuspecting ear, to adults that watch you perform and scrutinize every move, and yet can't believe their eyes when the object they're watching disappears into seemingly thin air, or multiplies before their eyes. Magic is fun, magic is entertaining, magic is spellbinding; and here are some cool magic tricks to play with and enjoy.

The best way to get started with doing magic and the tricks associated with them, is to begin with a trick using a deck of cards. These card tricks can seem amazing to the gullible viewer and can be added to your bag of cool magic tricks to be performed anyplace, anytime because all they require is a deck of cards. Sometimes you need an extra joker or two to pull off a card trick where the participant chooses a card, you hide it back in the deck, then shuffle and bingo----their chosen card magically appears between the two jokers, but most of the time all that is required is a standard deck.

A cool magic trick to entertain the kids is something we are all familiar with, easy to do, and yet thrills the kids every time you do it; and that is making slime. All you need to perform this trick is water, glue, and borax powder, mix them up, work the mixture and voila you have slime that will keep the kids entertained for hours playing with it after you have created it. They'll think you are a wizard.

Making a volcano used to be a staple for a lot of kids when they had to make up something for the science fair because it is easy to make, and really dramatic when set off and all that "lava" and smoke comes pouring out of the cone on top. It really can be touted as one of your cool magic tricks for kids because they have no idea what is going to happen as you are putting the trick together, and the final result is so dramatic, they are bowled over and screech with amazement. The basic volcano cone is just molded flour and water with some detergent added, and then the active ingredients include vinegar and baking soda. It's just simple chemistry at its best for this trick and the kids love it.

Now here we have something that would be relegated to the cool magic tricks bag that is very simple to pull off, but still boggles the average mind watching the trick as to how it is done. Believe me, if you have a handle on just the simplest basics of chemistry, you can wow all kinds of people because you can do what looks like amazing stuff with just the simplest of ingredients if you know how they will react with one another. Here's another example of chemistry in action; it's called the Burning Dollar Bill and it is based on the fact that alcohol and something soaked in water will have different flash points when fire or a flame is introduced into the area. Take a plain dollar bill and soak it in water until it remains damp to the touch (dollar bills are made of a cloth-like material so they soak up water well and will hold it for a while), then add some alcohol to the bill, strike a match, and light the bill. Because the alcohol has a lower flash point than the water-soaked cloth material, the alcohol will flame up and burn like crazy, while the water in the bill keeps it from catching at all. Then blow out the flames and show the untouched, unburned bill to all the disbelievers standing around watching. Sure to be a winner.

As your repertoire of cool magic tricks expands, be sure to include this simple but effective little trick. This one uses matches and creates the impression that a dead, used match will come back to life and light as well as it did the first time it was used. What is needed is indeed a new match, you dip it in some black ink, let dry, and cover with used ashes so it looks like it has been lit and all the pizazz is gone. But, surprise----when you strike it with a little abracadabra action, the "used" match springs to life and flames just perfectly. Just don't stand too close to the audience when you do this one so they can't see the tampering done to the match.

Magic is a wonderful part of our lives and should be treasured for the terrific art that it is. No matter how young or old we are, we all love to see a tried and true magician work his magic---literally---and we enjoy being part of all the fun. The best part is that cool magic tricks always pique our interest, and will always be a crowd pleaser no matter how many times they are done----that is the true "magic".
