Three Rules For Using your PC For Super Solid Music Production

By Mick LLaleBeoufey

Rule 1 - Go To The Source

First you should focus on having a great sounding source. If you realize that you are recording real sounds, like guitars and vocals you must spend some time making them sound as shocking as practicable before you put a microphone in front of them.

Bother to shine performances and twist the knobs on the amp. Get everything locked in before you push the record button because no quantity of studio necromancy will fix a bad sounding source...Enough related.

Rule two - Timing Is Everything

One mistake that makes a production stand out as newbie is slovenly timing. This usually shows up when recording real instruments mixed with sequenced instruments.

There are really two ways to solve this. The first solution is easily the best - that's to be sure that the performance is on time to begin with.

It kind of flows with rule number 1. This is making the source sound as good as possible. But say that your drummers chops are not up to par what are you to do?

Edit him!

inside each and every piece of audio recording software created today is the facility to cut and move tiny regions of audio. Use this to your advantage. Take those out of time hits, strums, slaps, or words and slide them into the correct timing position. Now with instruments like drums this will be a little more difficult and boring than it sounds. But it is the price you pay for having a tight sounding production.

Rule 3 Pitch Perfection

Listen, I'm not a pitch nazi or anything - OK actually I'm - but pitch is urgent to a good production. Second to bad timing, bad pitch will make your production scream newbie. So again work on the source. When you're tracking your guitars take a look at your tuning with $40 dollar tuner. Do it after each take if you have got to. Especially if you are bending strings during solos.

If you are recording vocals make sure the mix in the headphones has a solid pitch reference. You can also cheat by playing the vocal line on a keyboard and having the singer sing along to the notes. Yes it is a cheat, but after you delete the guide track nobody will ever know.
