There is nothing quite like watching the live performance of talented dancers on stage as they work in a collaborated effort to present a dramatic show. Several people work behind the scenes for months to bring perfection to the art of dance. If you have two left feet and have given up on ever pursuing your dream in dance and music, there are many areas where you can still be a part of a team that is much in demand to make up the opening show.
Musicians and Composers
Without the right music to accompany the dance it would not be so entertaining to look at which is where the composer or musician and choreographer come in. Usually the music has already been written but at times a new version is specially written to accommodate the choreographer whose job it is to design the dance steps to bring out the best in the dancers involved.
The Set Designer
Creating a background of a theme that matches the dance and music is important in portraying the right atmosphere and many parts of the background are often used as tools to enhance the dance itself. A skilled set designer has the foresight to set the mood that will present a story in conjunction with the music and dance. To the viewer, the scene may not make sense until the show begins but then it all comes together.
Lighting Designer
For a stage performance lights can mean everything. The lighting designer has to be able to produce many effects, such as cast shadows, color wash, silhouettes and even put the spotlight on moves as required in the scene. Many lighting effects, such as making the switch from an indoor to outdoor scene, are not easy to do even though it appears so. For the lighting director, however, it is easily accomplished. This is because unlike other dance professions, the lighting director is part of a technical field and it requires schooling as well as a love for stage performances.
The Costume Designer
If the performers appeared on stage in drab apparel, the show would lose much of its zeal. This is where the costume designer brings pizzazz to the show. Working with the choreographer, certain textures and colors are discussed to give the dancers important elements that blend in with the background and music. Understanding how light plays on material is often an important factor in the dance presentation.
The Make-Up Artist
The make-up artist has to be very creative. This means to have the talent to be able to make-up paint and brushes to create different looks, such as that of youthfulness, evil, kind or aging. Many times it needs to be repeated more than once. This is where the professionals stand out, because it is not as simple as many assume it is. Working on a human face is very different than a canvas and on occasion the make-up artist ends up doing hair design, also.
There is much cooperation required when producing a show related to dance. These were examples of a few careers students can use to appreciate and be made aware of the importance of cooperation in the many careers that are somehow associated with dance.
